An elephant named "Raja" went on a rampage in Mawanella last night following a Vesak Perahera procession. The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m., resulting in the critical injury of a mahout, who has been hospitalized at Mawanella Base Hospital.

Raja, part of the Sri Dalada Maligawa fleet in Kandy, was seen panicking and marching through the town's streets. Authorities have since secured the elephant at the  market grounds under special security.
Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the rampage and ensure public safety.
