NFF Dissident Says Weerawansa Should Take The Blame For Uva Result

September 30, 2014
Udaya Kumara, former NFF member who did not receive nomination from the United People's Freedom Alliance ton contest the Uva Provincial Council election alleged that The National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa should take responsibility for the party's failure at the PC election.

Weerawansa's party, which contested alone for the Uva election from Badulla District, failed to secure a seat from the province. The National Freedom Front contested with the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) for the district of Moneragala.

Udaya Kumara asserted that the result of Uva reflects Weerawansa's inability as a party leader.

Udaya Kumara was not given nomination from the UPFA even though he was a member of the NFF, a constitutuent party of the UPFA. Thereafter he ran independently and his independent group obtained 3781 votes (1.57%). Udaya Kumara resigned from the National Freedom Front (NFF) just weeks before the Uva Provincial Council election.

He argues that if that amount of votes were added to the UPFA, it could have obtained 2 more seats. UPFA polled 140,850 votes (58.34%) and won 8 seats from Moneragala in the last election. The UNP won 5 seats and the JVP received one.

Udaya Kumara, however, could not secure a seat in the election.
