Amidst speculations that the government was preparing for a "surprise" Presidential election, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has called for a meeting of party leaders of the constituent parties in the UPFA, after the Cabinet meeting tomorrow.
It is learnt that, at the meeting, the President will get viewpoints from constituent parties of the government on going for a presidential election.
However, it is still not clear whether the constituent parties of the government, including leftist parties, the Jathika Hela Urumaya and the National Freedom Front are supportive of the idea.
At the same time, the party leaders meeting will also see a progress review of the recently held Uva Provincial Council election, a ruling party spokesman told Asian Mirror. However, he refused to say whether the possibility of Presidential election would be discussed at the meeting.
Certain media reports have claimed that the ruling party is exploring the possibility of conducting the Presidential election before January 07, ahead of Pope Francis's visit to Sri Lanka.
This is the first UPFA party leaders meeting after the Uva Provincial Council Election was held on September 20. The President left for New York to attend the UN General Assembly Sessions, just after the Uva polls. He returned to the island only yesterday.
It is said that tomorrow’s meeting will focus mainly on the forthcoming presidential election. It is thought that the outcome of the Uva polls will also be discussed.
