The Bodu Bala Sena and Myanmar’s 969 Movement signed an agreement to work together to establish a region without fundamentalism.
The leader of the 969 Movement Ashin Wirathu Thera and BBS General Secretary Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera signed this agreement on Tuesday (Sep 30) in Colombo. Wirathu Thera had spoken at the BBS Sangha Convention on Sunday (28) and said that they would join forces. The groups have said their agreement involves networking and building the capacity to stabilize Buddhism.
BBS Chief Kirama Wimalajothi Thera said that the BBS would like to join forces with all Buddhist groups in the world as well as moderate Hindu and Muslim groups to make a society without fundamentalism and hard line politics a reality.
However, Ashin Wirathu and his 969 Movement has been accused of instigating deadly violence against minority Muslims in Myanmar. Bodu Bala Sena was itself implicated in riots which took place in Aluthgama and the vicinity in last June.
