Campaigning for the 2024 general election will officially end at midnight today, marking the beginning of a mandated "silent period" that will last until the election day, November 14.
National Election Commission (NEC) Chairman RMAL Ratnayake confirmed that electioneering activities will be prohibited from midnight today. This includes the closure of campaign offices set up on an electorate basis, which must cease operations by midnight on November 12.
He also clarified that while party and independent group offices in electoral districts can remain open, candidates are restricted from displaying any campaign material at these locations after the deadline.
Additionally, candidates may continue operating campaign offices at their residences, but no propaganda materials can be displayed. If these residences are located within a 500-meter radius of a polling station, they must also refrain from any public display of campaign materials.
