Sajith Premadasa, leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has warned that the new government will face the same financial challenges as the previous administration, particularly when debt repayments begin in 2028. Addressing a public rally in he said that failure to manage the country’s debt could lead Sri Lanka to a crisis similar to the one experienced in 2022.
He also criticized the government’s plan to shut down the Thriposha factory, which produces a vital nutritional supplement for mothers and children. He accused the government of undermining the welfare of the nation’s most vulnerable by attempting to privatize the factory. "A week after taking office, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who claimed to represent the oppressed, plotted against the country’s mothers and children," he said.
He also raised concerns over a gazette notification issued on September 27 regarding the factory closure, questioning why the government had not been transparent about the matter. He further condemned the government's handling of labor issues, claiming that political promises, such as the resolution of teachers' benefits, had been abandoned as soon as they served their purpose.
The SJB leader concluded by urging voters to reject the government's policies, warning that failing to address the country’s economic problems could result in bankruptcy by 2028.
