The silent period for Sri Lanka's 2024 general election officially began at midnight on Monday, marking the end of the campaigning phase. The silent period, which prohibits any form of electioneering, will remain in effect until November 14.
Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Rathnayake, urged all candidates to comply with election laws and regulations during this period. He also confirmed that all preparations for the election are now complete.
Voters who have not received their official polling cards can now download them online via the National Election Commission's e-services website.
Security measures for the election have been finalized, with nearly 200,000 state sector employees assigned to election duties. The transportation of ballot boxes to polling stations is set to begin tomorrow.
A total of 8,361 candidates, including 5,015 from political parties and 3,346 independents, are vying for seats in the upcoming election.
