UNP Demands Immediate Action Against Assault On Chris Nonis

United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella yesterday said that the incident where a politician has allegedly assaulted the Sri Lankan High Commissioner for the United Kingdom Chris Nonis has created a bad reputation for Sri Lanka internationally.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo the UNP Parliamentarian said that the UNP demands action against the politician.

“Such an incident has never occurred in the history of Sri Lanka’s foreign services, the government should take steps to take immediate action against the responsible party”, Kiriella said.

Kiriella said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was present at the scene and demanded to know ‘what right does a politician have to assault a High Commissioner in front of the President himself?’

However, when asked about the UNP's plans on protesting over the incident’, the parliamentarian said that the media should urge the government in demand of action against the politician.

“The media should urge the government to take actions, it is the duty and the responsibility of the media to demand justice”, he said.

It was said that Dr. Chris Nonis resigned due to an allegedly assault by the Politician in New York while the Sri Lankan delegation led by President Rajapaksa were there to attend the UN General Assembly Sessions.
