Police Warn of New Scam Targeting Abuse Victims

November 29, 2024

Sri Lanka Police is waraning of a scam using fake social media accounts and the counterfeit logo of the Police Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women to exploit abuse victims.

The Bureau operates a confidential hotline (109) for victims to report abuse, emphasizing that all communication is handled strictly through the hotline. However, fraudsters have been using platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram under fake accounts named ‘slremover’ and ‘SL protection’ to collect personal information and photos from victims, later using the data for extortion.

The Police clarified that official complaints are only processed through the hotline and urged the public not to share confidential information through social media.

Victims of the scam are advised to contact the Bureau at 109 or file a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
