Gautam Adani Breaks Silence on US Bribery Indictment

December 01, 2024

Adani Group founder Gautam Adani has addressed allegations by U.S. authorities accusing him of involvement in a $265 million bribery scheme, reaffirming his conglomerate's commitment to regulatory compliance.

Speaking at an awards ceremony in Jaipur, Adani said, "Every attack makes us stronger, and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group." He criticized the rapid spread of negativity over facts and pledged to adhere to world-class compliance standards.

The indictment alleges that Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and Adani Green Energy's managing director, Vneet S. Jaain, paid bribes to secure Indian power contracts and misled U.S. investors during fundraisings. The Adani Group has dismissed the accusations as "baseless" and vowed to pursue legal remedies.

The scandal marks the second major challenge for the group in two years, triggering disruptions in India's parliament and prompting a review of a power deal by an Indian state. France’s TotalEnergies has also paused its investments in the conglomerate.

Despite the controversy, Adani Group’s stocks, which initially lost $34 billion in market value, have rebounded as some investors and partners continue to support the conglomerate.
The Indian government said that it has not received any requests from U.S. authorities regarding the case.
