Six people including four Parliamentarians of the United National Party (UNP), were released on personal bonds of Rs. 1 million each when they appeared before Colombo Fort Magistrate this morning.
Court issued notice on four UNP MPs including Ravi Karunanayake, R. Yogarajan, Ajith P. Perera and Nalin Bandara Jayamaha to appear in court on October 27 for allegedly trespassing into Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya premises in Colombo 2 and assaulting its members.
When they appeared before court this morning, the MPs denied allegations saying they never trespassed into the trade union and assaulted its members. The MPs asserted that they were merely carrying out their duties as the representatives of the people.
Meanwhile, the state affiliated trade union of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority had a difficulty in proving their ownership over the building they were occupying as the union office.
The Magistrate informed relevant parties that if the union could not prove ownership over the building they could be charged for utilization of state property illegally.
The Parliamentarians, who were members of the UNP MP delegation to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, said they had received information that resources of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority were being used for propaganda activities targeting the forthcoming presidential election.
