Daily Operations Of Katunayake Airport Interrupted: Airport Workers On Strike

Day to day operations of the Katunayake Bandaranaike Internatiional Airport have been interrupted this morning duen to  a trade union action by its employees.


Them state affiliated trade union at Katimayake Bandaranaike Airport has started the trade union action based on six main demands. Airport sources told Asian Mirror that nearly 2000 Airport workers are presently taking part in the trade union action. Thousands of passengers were seen stranded inside the airport premises this  morning. 


The strikers have already taken control of the power supply unit of the international airport, posing a serious threat to its operations. As a result, electricity supply to the Katunayake international airport has been interrupted. 


They charged that repeated complaints they made to the authorities did not elicit any positive. "We had no option but to resort to a strong trade union action," a stalwart of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party trade union told reporters this morning.


They also threaten to cut off communication lines if the authorities fail to address their grievances.


Their major demands include Rs. 10000 pay hike, streamlining the medical insurance scheme for then airport workers, expedite loan schemes and removal of the security chief of the Airport.
