The United National Party and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna are likely to take part in the protest rally organized by the ‘Pivithuru Hetak’ organization which is led by JHU Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana thera.
The main demand of the protest rally is the abolition of Executive Presidency and constitutional amendments strengthening good governance. The protest will be held on November 12 at Muththaiah ground in Colombo.
This will be the first time the two main political parties of the opposition will come together under a common umbrella after a hiatus of a few years.
Meanwhile, addressing a press conference this morning, Maduluwawe Sobitha thera, Convener of the Movement For a Just Society, said his organization would make its best effort to abolish Executive Presidency which has now become a ‘curse’ to the entire country. Sobitha thera said he would draw the support of political parties of the opposition to bring about a ‘change’ in the future.
The press conference was also attended by opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka, Parliamentarian Arjuna Ranatunga and Democratic People’s Front Leader Mano Ganesan.
At the press conference, representatives of the opposition political parties pledged to form a common front to battle Executive Presidency.
Meanwhile Pivithuru Hetak organization has also indicated that it would form a common alliance with the Movement for a Just Society on key issues concerning the country.
