NPC Opposition Leader Removed From Party

February 03, 2014

Northern Provincial Council Opposition Leader K. Kamalendran, who is a suspect in the murder case of Delft PS Chairman, has been removed from the EPDP, a party spokesman told ‘Asian Mirror’.

The Central Committee of the EPDP, the topmost decision making body of the party, has made this decision on January 29, he said.

Kamalendran, 47, claims to be one of the senior members of the EPRLF who started his political career with the EPRLF in the mid 80s. However, TNA Parliamentarian and EPRLF stalwart Suresh Premchandran had said Kamalendran was never a member of the EPRLF.

“I can state with responsibility that Kamalendran was never a member of the EPRLF. I was a member of the EPRLF from the very outset and I know about our cadres. Kamalendran’s father, Kandasamy, was a member of the EPRLF and he was a trade unionist,” Premachandran had said.

Kamalendran was arrested in connection with the shootout which killed the Chairman of Delft Pradeshiya Sabha, Daniel Rexian, a member of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP). Police said Daniel’s death was the result of an illicit affair between Kamalendran and the late PS Chairman’s wife. Rexian’s wife, Anita, was also arrested in connection with the incident.
