Ravi And Vajira Protest Over UNP Nomination Lists

February 05, 2014

The UNP’s nomination committee work has hit a snag at the eleventh hour with MP Ravi Karunanayake and Vajira Abeywardena protesting the nomination lists of Colombo and Galle districts.

As a result of the fresh crisis, the UNP will not be able to submit nomination papers to the Elections Department today (05), internal party sources told ‘Asian Mirror’.

Vajira Abeywardena, former Parliamentarian of the UNP, has raised concerns over giving nomination to Chandralal Abeygunawardena, a prominent businessman, to contest the Southern Provincial Council election from the Galle district. However, the Leadership Council of the UNP is of the view that Abeygunawardena should be fielded as a candidate for the Southern Province.

Meanwhiule, UNP’s Colombo District Parliamentarian and Leadership Council member Ravi Karunanayake and several electorate organizers of the Colombo district have raised concerns over some minority representatives contesting from Colombo. As a result, the Colombo district list too has not been finalized so far.
