Former Captain of the Sri Lankan Cricket team Arjuna Ranatunga, commending the captaincy of Dinesh Chandimal, the regular captain of the T20 team, said Chandimal was the one who brought Sri Lanka back to the number 01 slot in ICC T20 rankings.
"I don't think Chandimal is a bad captain. Everyone has rough patches in their careers. However, captaincy is something that keeps changing," Ranatunga said. The former Sri Lankan captain did not make any specific remark about Lasith Maliga's captaincy. Malinga, who took over captaincy for the match against New Zealand, led the Sri Lanka towards T20 World Cup victory while Chandimal was kept out of the side for his lack of form.
"Whether it is T20 or ODI, one cannot undermine the value of an ICC world Cup. This is indeed a great achievement. Earlier there was a notion that the Sri Lankan team cannot win a match when its top three or four players fail to fire. This team has successfully challenged that," Ranatunga said adding that the Sri Lankan team now has highly talented batsmen as well as bowlers.
