Opposition MPs raised concerns in Parliament today over the shooting incident at the Hulftsdorp Court complex, warning that escalating murders are putting people’s lives at risk.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said, “It is a serious situation if an individual’s life is at risk even inside the court.” He stressed that killings occur daily and called for an immediate solution. Premadasa urged the government to take stern action to restore law and order, assuring that the Opposition is ready to support such measures.
Chief Government Whip Minister Nalinda Jayatissa responded that the government is taking underworld activities seriously and has begun cracking down on criminal networks. He noted that an amnesty period was declared for handing over illegal weapons, with many people complying. The government is also working to extradite underworld criminals from Dubai and India.
SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekara claimed that “some 78 people have been killed in recent days” and that killings have become a routine occurrence.
Minister Jayatissa assured that police, the STF, and intelligence services have been deployed to enhance security across the country.
