North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has appeared in state media looking healthy, dismissing rumours that he had died following an alleged brain haemorrhage.
The 42 year old leader was pictured in the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun visiting a clothing and footwear exhibition alongside his daughter. His appearance came hours after Wanjun Xie, who identifies himself as the chairman of the banned Chinese Democratic Party and is based in the United States, claimed without evidence that Kim had fallen into a coma at a hospital in Beijing and subsequently died.
Rumours surrounding North Korea’s leadership are frequent due to the country’s strict secrecy, which makes independent verification of information difficult.
Xie has previously made unverified claims, including speculation about the death of Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, South Korean intelligence officials told the Yonhap News Agency that there was no information to support the latest reports. They also noted that no unusual security movements or significant refugee movements had been observed along the Chinese border, which could potentially indicate a major political upheaval.
Experts believe the recurring rumours are largely driven by uncertainty surrounding North Korea’s dynastic succession. South Korean intelligence officials believe Kim may be grooming his young daughter, estimated to be around 13 years old, as his potential successor. However, her young age and the country’s history of male leadership have fuelled speculation about the future of the regime and the possibility of an unprecedented transition of power.
