A man who climbed a high-voltage electricity transmission tower in Kamburupitiya in protest over a family dispute has been ordered by the Matara Magistrate’s Court to compensate the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for the losses incurred due to the incident.
The incident, which occurred on July 21, forced the CEB to suspend electricity supply for more than two hours to several areas, including Thihagoda, Kamburupitiya, Akuressa, Mulatiyana, Deiyandara, Mawarala and Deniyaya.
Following his arrest, the suspect was produced before court and remanded. The court had also directed the CEB to calculate the financial loss caused by the disruption and submit a report.
Police informed the court that the power outage resulted in a loss of Rs. 201,059.90 to the CEB.
The suspect admitted to the offence, after which the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered him to pay the CEB the amount of the loss. The case was postponed until November 3.
