United National Party (UNP) Deputy General Secretary Harin Fernando has accused the Government of continuing to act like an opposition party instead of implementing its own development projects.
Speaking to the media yesterday (20), after appearing before the Badulla Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case involving an alleged violation of election laws, Fernando said the Government should focus on introducing its own initiatives rather than inaugurating projects initiated by previous administrations.
He claimed that several recent Government initiatives, including employment opportunities in Israel and Japan and the establishment of an insulin manufacturing facility, had originated under the previous administration.
“I saw the jobs in Israel and Japan. Those opportunities are still coming from the programmes we introduced. I also saw an insulin factory being opened. Those were projects we brought in,” he said.
Fernando further claimed that the Metro bus service was another initiative introduced by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“Instead of opening projects initiated by others, it would be better if they could implement and showcase some projects of their own,” he said.
However, Fernando said he was pleased with the Government’s efforts, although he believed the pace of implementation was too slow.
“I am happy with the Government, but the pace at which it is moving is far too slow,” he added.
