The body of the doctor from the Badulla Hospital, reported missing from yesterday, found on a rock near the Mapakadawewa area in Mahiyangana, the Police said.
Consultant Anaesthesiologist Dr. Prabath Dayaratne, attached to the Badulla Teaching Hospital, has been reported missing, while his car was found near the 17th Mile Post at Mapakadawewa on the Badulla–Mahiyangana road.
Police said Dr. Dayaratne had been on duty at the Badulla Teaching Hospital yesterday morning (23), but no information regarding his whereabouts had been received since then. He is a resident of the Kandy area.
Investigations were launched after CCTV footage from the Meegahakiula area showed the doctor’s vehicle travelling towards Mahiyangana. A subsequent search led to the discovery of the car near the 17th Mile Post on the Badulla–Mahiyangana main road.
Police said the area where the vehicle was found is surrounded by forest frequented by wild elephants. Special security precautions have therefore been taken during the search for the missing doctor.
Police, crime scene investigation officers and the Army are expected to launch a joint search operation today (24). Officers from the Mahiyangana Police and wildlife officials have also joined the search.
No definite information has yet emerged regarding the reason for Dr. Dayaratne’s disappearance or his current whereabouts. Investigations are continuing using CCTV footage, telephone data and other available information.
Police have requested anyone with information regarding the doctor to contact the nearest police station.
Search operations and investigations are continuing, with authorities expected to take further action as new information emerges.
