Buddhist monks and supporters calling for the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera remained on the road outside the Presidential Secretariat this morning (16), following discussions with presidential officials yesterday (15).

The group arrived at the Secretariat yesterday afternoon as part of the “Justice for the Robe – National Pledge Offering and Freedom March” and sought a definite response from the government regarding his release.

Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake informed the group that a definite answer could not be provided.

Presidential Chief of Staff Prabath Chandrakeerthi subsequently met the monks and said the President had been informed of their request. He said the matter would be handled in accordance with the relevant legal procedures and constitutional provisions.

When the monks asked how long the process would take, Chandrakeerthi said he could not provide a specific timeframe.

The monks and their supporters then said they would remain outside the Secretariat until their demand was met.
