Police have arrested a woman and a man for allegedly assaulting a four-year-old child and abandoning her in an isolated area in Wattegama.
The suspects were arrested by Hali-Ela Police in the Hali-Ela area on Friday (14). Police identified the woman as the child’s mother.
The investigation was launched after police received a tip-off through the emergency hotline on Thursday (13). Acting on the information, Wattegama Police found the child abandoned along the Wattegama–Yatirawana Road and took her into their care.
Investigations revealed that the child had allegedly been left at the location at around 7 a.m. by individuals travelling in a three-wheeler.
Police subsequently examined CCTV footage to identify the vehicle and arrested the two suspects based on evidence uncovered during the investigation.
