The number of subjects offered at the GCE Ordinary Level Examination will be limited to seven, including History and Aesthetic Studies, under the new education reforms scheduled to be implemented from 2027.
The proposed changes were discussed at a Parliamentary Subcommittee meeting on education reforms chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the Department of Communication of Parliament said.
Under the reforms, vocational education will be introduced to students from Grades 10 and 11, while modules on social cohesion, law and ethics will be incorporated into the curricula for Grades 12 and 13.
As an initial step, activity books, teachers’ guides and modules required for Grades 2 and 6 have already been prepared. Teacher training programmes and other related preparations are also underway.
