The National Police Commission (NPC) has cancelled the proposed transfers of several senior police officers, including Senior DIG Ranmal Kodithuwakku, who oversees Crime and Traffic, and DIG Ashoka Dharmasena, who heads the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB).
The Commission took the decision at a meeting yesterday (1), after discussing the transfer proposal submitted by IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya.
According to Police Media, Police Headquarters had recently decided to transfer several senior officers with immediate effect to meet institutional requirements and ensure the independence of investigations. Kodithuwakku was among those officers.
The cancelled transfers also included those of the PNB Director, two Superintendents of Police and a female Chief Inspector, among others.
Meanwhile, Kodithuwakku appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday (30) to provide a statement regarding a stock of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘Ice’, worth more than Rs. 800 million found concealed in two containers at the Colombo Port. He left after giving a statement for approximately three hours.
The IGP has also directed the CID to investigate alleged failures and negligence by police officers in acting on information received by Kodithuwakku about two containers suspected of carrying illegal narcotics at the port.
