Police have fired tear gas to bring the unrest at Mahara Prison under control as tensions within the prison premises continued to escalate.
Authorities deployed tear gas in an effort to disperse the inmates and restore order after reports of disturbances inside the prison.
Meanwhile, a large contingent of Navy personnel was deployed to a section of the prison following concerns that inmates were attempting to escape.
According to reports, inmates inside the prison pelted stones at the security personnel, prompting police to use tear gas to contain the situation.
