Independent MP for Jaffna District, Ramanathan Archchuna, who was recently granted bail, has expressed his decision to exit politics, citing his deep dissatisfaction with the political environment.

Speaking to the media following his release, Archchuna, a doctor by profession, emphasized that his involvement in politics was never part of his long-term plans. “I really don’t like politics,” he said. “For 38 years, I never voted. I entered politics purely to serve the people, but it’s a field I have no interest in continuing.”

He made it clear that while he would fulfill his duties as long as he remains in Parliament, he intends to step away from the political scene soon. “I won’t stay any longer. Politics is not for me,” Archchuna affirmed.

The MP’s release follows his arrest in Jaffna on January 29. Archchuna was charged with obstructing the duties of police officers in Anuradhapura on January 20. The incident occurred when the MP reportedly clashed with traffic officers who had stopped his vehicle in the Rambewa area. The officers were inspecting his car, which allegedly had VIP lights, and were questioning his manner of driving, which blocked other vehicles.

Following his arrest, Archchuna was produced before Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Alaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya and granted bail with two sureties of Rs. 200,000 each. The case is set to be heard again on February 3.
