Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga has risen to World No. 1 in the men’s javelin world rankings.

The achievement follows his historic gold medal victory in the men’s javelin event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where he produced a throw of 89.75 metres.

His triumph marked the first time Sri Lanka has won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s javelin event. At the time of the competition, Tharanga was ranked World No. 2.

Tharanga also holds the world’s best throw of the 2026 season in the men’s javelin. Notably, his Commonwealth Games title ended a 20-year wait for a gold medal in the event.

Earlier this season, on June 4 at the Rome Diamond League, Tharanga recorded a throw of 92.62 metres, setting a new Sri Lankan national record while also registering the longest throw in the world this season.
