Sri Lankan star defeats Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra with an 88.14m throw in Lausanne
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga once again underlined his status as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers after winning the men’s javelin event at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Tharanga produced a throw of 88.14 metres to take first place, edging India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who finished second with 88.05m—his best throw of the 2026 season.
Leading the 2026 Diamond League standings
Tharanga currently sits at the top of the 2026 Diamond League men’s javelin standings, having collected 31 points from four competitions.
Anderson Peters is second with 28 points, while Kishane Thompson has 18.
After finishing runner-up at the Rabat Diamond League, Tharanga went on to win his next three competitions, highlighting his remarkable consistency throughout the season.
He has also already secured qualification for the Diamond League Final.
The historic 92.62m throw
The defining moment of Tharanga’s 2026 campaign came on June 4 at the Rome Diamond League’s Golden Gala, where he launched the javelin 92.62 metres.
The throw was a new Sri Lankan national record and the best javelin performance in the world in 2026 at the time. It also set a Golden Gala meeting record and ranks as the second-best javelin throw in Asian history.
The performance propelled Tharanga into the top eight of the all-time world rankings.
The only Asian thrower ahead of him is Pakistan’s Paris 2024 Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, whose Asian record stands at 92.97m.
Although Germany’s Julian Weber recently threw 90.40m at the European Championships, Tharanga’s 92.62m remains the leading throw of the 2026 season.
Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow
Before his latest Lausanne triumph, Tharanga’s biggest achievement of the year came at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he captured the gold medal.
He produced a winning throw of 89.75m in the final.
Neeraj Chopra finished second with 85.83m, while Yashvir Singh took bronze with 85.41m.
Tharanga’s success in 2026 has not been built around a single outstanding performance. He has consistently produced world-class results throughout the season:
- Perth Track Classic – 83.07m – 1st
- Diyagama – 89.37m – 1st, national record
- Kip Keino Classic – 89.28m – 1st
- Rabat Diamond League – 85.97m – 2nd
- Rome Diamond League – 92.62m – 1st
- Ostrava Golden Spike – 86.57m – 1st
- Doha Diamond League – 88.68m – 1st
- Glasgow Commonwealth Games – 89.75m – Gold
- Lausanne Diamond League – 88.14m – 1st
His progression from 83.07m in Perth to 92.62m in Rome within a matter of months is a clear indication of the extraordinary development he has made during the 2026 season.
In the latest World Athletics world rankings, Germany’s Julian Weber sits first with 1,364 points, while Tharanga is second with 1,354 points. However, when performances are considered, Tharanga’s 92.62m remains the world-leading mark for 2026.
At just 23 years old, Rumesh Tharanga is no longer simply Sri Lanka’s leading javelin thrower. He has established himself as a genuine global contender—and his latest victory over Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra in Lausanne provides yet another statement of his growing dominance on the world stage.
