SC to Hear Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Security Petition in March

The Supreme Court has scheduled 19 March 2025 to hear the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s lawyers, seeking the reinstatement of his reduced security detail.

Rajapaksa argues that the withdrawal of his security poses a direct threat to his safety. His petition states that no armed forces personnel have been assigned to his protection, leaving his security solely in the hands of police officers. He contends that, as the leader who played a key role in ending Sri Lanka’s decades-long civil war, he remains vulnerable to terrorist threats.

The case names Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and other Cabinet Ministers as respondents. Rajapaksa claims that the reduction of his security is arbitrary and violates his fundamental rights. He is requesting the Court to declare the decision unlawful and order a full threat assessment, as well as the reinstatement of his security detail.
