The management of Lanka Sugar Company (Pvt) Ltd has decided to close its Sevanagala factory indefinitely, until further notice, due to an ongoing workers’ strike.
In a statement, the company said the decision was taken to minimise the financial losses caused by the disruption to production.
A group of employees at the Sevanagala unit had withdrawn from their duties and refused to commence production from 2 p.m. on 25 August. As a result, all employees except those engaged in essential services were granted leave on 26 and 27 August to prevent further financial losses.
Although the Chief Operating Officer instructed employees to resume production yesterday (28), workers continued their strike after the factory reopened, prompting the management to close the facility indefinitely.
