A five-member Sri Lankan delegation is scheduled to leave for Saudi Arabia next Tuesday to look into arrangements for filing an appeal before the country’s Supreme Court on behalf of Sivarasa Anojan, who has been sentenced to death.

The delegation will include MP and lawyer Faizer Mustapha, President’s Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma and an official from the Attorney General’s Department.

Anojan was sentenced to death by Saudi Arabia’s Court of Appeal. According to Mustapha, the ruling can be appealed before the country’s Supreme Court.

Mustapha said the delegation would discuss the legal proceedings with Saudi lawyers and take steps to submit the appeal in accordance with the required procedures.

Saudi Arabia’s Court of Appeal recently sentenced Anojan to death over an allegation that a comment he posted on Facebook constituted an insult to religion.

Meanwhile, Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa recently said diplomatic interventions were already underway to seek a reduction in his sentence.
