MP S.M. Marikkar said concerns over democracy and the rule of law were discouraging investors from coming to Sri Lanka.
He said investors considered the state of democracy and how the law was enforced before investing in another country.
Marikkar also questioned claims that investments worth US$ 500 million had been secured through two local companies at Colombo Port City. He further claimed that a US$ 320 million Chinese investment in the port had been withdrawn.
Citing losses linked to coal, the controversy surrounding 323 containers, the withdrawal of investments and the lack of new investment, he said the country had experienced destruction rather than change.
Marikkar also urged journalists to speak out against proposed legislation, saying they had a responsibility to protect their pens and cameras.
