“There Is No One Else to Arrest, So Govt is Coming After Us,” Claims Mahinda Rajapaksa

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has criticised the current political climate, alleging that the Government is targeting members of his family and close associates because it has “no one else to arrest.”

Responding to questions from journalists on investigations and arrests involving Yoshitha Rajapaksa and Namal Rajapaksa, Rajapaksa said the actions were politically motivated.

“There is no one else to arrest, so they are coming after us. We have always stood with the people, and that is the reason for all this,” he said.

Asked who the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna would nominate as its candidate for the 2029 presidential election, Rajapaksa said the decision would ultimately rest with the people.

Responding to a question on whether Namal Rajapaksa would be the party’s candidate, he said, “If the people ask for him, we will nominate him. We will not field someone whom the people do not want.”

Rajapaksa also accused the Government of failing to address the problems faced by farmers, claiming that the current administration was out of touch with the agricultural community and increasingly disconnected from the public.

He further said he had no intention of retiring from politics and intended to continue building a strong political movement with the support of the people.
