Underworld figure Lalith Kannangara, alias ‘Bus Lalith’, who was arrested in Dubai, was brought back to Sri Lanka this morning (25), Police said.
A team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) escorted the suspect to Sri Lanka, Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler said.
The 36-year-old suspect, a resident of Kalutara South, had recently been arrested by authorities in Dubai. He is wanted in Sri Lanka in connection with several alleged crimes, including murder, extortion and other criminal activities.
An Interpol Red Notice had been obtained against him by the Western Province South Crime Division in connection with a case pending before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court.
The Colombo High Court has also issued an open warrant against Kannangara for failing to appear in court in connection with a murder case.
Meanwhile, the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court has issued an open warrant against him over an incident on 20 September 2021, in which he allegedly went to a residence in Neluntuduwa and attempted to shoot an individual.
A further open warrant has been issued by the same court in connection with an incident on 16 October 2022, in which three individuals were allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon.
The CID has commenced further investigations following the suspect’s return to Sri Lanka.
