Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken over inquiries into Wassim Thajudeen's death, informed Police sources told Asian Mirror.
Homicide Unit is arguably the most capable unit in the CID and it consists of handpicked officers who are vastly experienced in investigating murders.
Police Department sources said the Homicide Unit had been called in to carry out inquiries as circumstantial evidence had established that Thajudeen's death was a murder.
Meanwhile, it is also in the grapevine that a section of Thajudeen's family are attempting to "scuttle" the investigation claiming that it was an accidental death and a further investigation was not warranted.
However, speaking to Asian Mirror, a senior officer of the Police Headquarters said such developments would not make any impact on the ongoing investigation.
"At this point, the investigation is based on facts and circumstantial evidence. Therefore, claims made by his family members will not make any impact on the outcome of the inquiry," he said.
The Colombo Magistrate Court last week instructed the CID to check telephone details of Thajudeen as part of its investigations.
