Party Seniors To Present Motion Against Sirisena’s SLFP Post

Plans are afoot to present an urgent resolution to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Central Committee seeking removal of Party Chairman Maithripala Sirisena, highly placed sources of the party said.

President Sirisena, at a meeting held on Wednesday, gave his nod to convene the party Central Committee before the election. The meeting was attended by Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva, party General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha.

The party seniors informed the President that they needed to take action against the SLFP members contesting the election on the United National Front ticket. They include Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Arjuna Ranatunga, M.K.D.S. Gunawardena and Hirunika Premachandra.

Meanwhile, a section of party seniors have stressed the need of challenging President Sirisena’s position in the party in the wake of his statement on the UPFA nominations.

They have decided to present a resolution to the Central Committee on the matter, at the next meeting.

However, according to the party constitution, Sirisena cannot be removed from his position as the party Chairman without amending the SLFP constitution.
