MDMK To Launch Protests Demanding International Probe Into 'Genocide'

September 08, 2015

The MDMK will hold protest demonstrations throughout Tamil Nadu State on September 21 demanding an international probe into the massacre of innocent Tamils during the military offensive by the Sri Lankan government in 2009, The New Indian Express said.

“The protests will coincide with the protest rally to be held before the UN office at Geneva by the Lankan Tamil diaspora on the same day”, said a resolution passed at the party’s high level meet and district secretaries conclave on Monday.

The resolution said the report of a panel constituted by the UNHRC which carried out an inquiry into the war crimes would be submitted by this month. The panel was not allowed to enter the place of crime and hence the report would not give justice, the resolution opined.

A new proposal by the US for a domestic probe instead of an international inquiry would make the accused as the judge, the party said. It also pointed out that the Lankan army had not withdrawn from Tamil areas and Sinhalese settlements had not been removed under the new national government in the island.
