Two Sentenced For 1999 Attempted Assassination Of Chandrika Kumaratunga

Two individuals were sentenced to long prison terms by Colombo High Court for the attempted assassination of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on December 18, 1999.

Velayuthan Vartharajah was sentenced to 290 years of rigorous imprisonment, to be served in 30 years, while Chandra Ragupathi was aentenced to 300 years rigorous imprisonment, also to be served in 30 years.

A third accused, Vasanthi Ragupathi, was acquitted and released.

The two individuals were found guilty of conspiring to assassinate Kumaratunga and conspiring to cause death of 26 people.

The suicide bomb blast took place at the final election rally during the 1999 Presidential Election.
