Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris today ordered the OIC of Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division to appear at court on November 5 and give explanation as to why former Presidential Secretariat Lalith Weeratunga and former Director General of TRC were not presented at the Magistrate's Courts before filing a case at the High Court.

Handing out a 44-page judgement, the Additional Magistrate said that the FCID has contradicted the accepted legal procedure in this case.

This came to light when the FCID requested the Additional Magistrate to remove the travel ban imposed on Palpita.

The Additional Magistrate directed that a suspect in a case filed under Public Property Act must be arrested and produced before the Magistrate's Court before the case is filed at the High Court.

Meanwhile, the Additional Magistrate also blamed the Attorney General's Department, pointing out that the AG Department must guide the Police on the correct procedure if the Police was not following it.

Weeratunga and Palpita are accused over the misappropriation of government funds and using it to distribute 'sil-redi' in Buddhist temples. They were released under strict bail conditions by the Colombo High Court yesterday.
