V. Anandasangaree's Son Elected To Canadian Parliament

Gary Anandasangaree, son of TULF leader V. Anandasangaree, has won the new riding of Scarborough-Rouge Park for the Liberal party, beating the Conservatives after the party dropped candidate Jerry Bance late in the campaign.

Anandasangaree surged ahead of the the other candidates with an overwhelming majority of the vote. Conservative Leslyn Lewis came in a distant second, followed by NDP candidate Rev. Kantharatnam Shanthikumar.

Gary Anandasangaree is an internationally recognized human rights lawyer and community activist.

He attended Osgoode Hall Law School, was called to the bar in 2006, and now manages his own firm in Scarborough. Gary has been a passionate advocate for human rights issues, regularly representing Lawyer’s Rights Watch Canada at the United Nations.

Gary Anandasangaree has demonstrated leadership at a number of organizations aimed at supporting his local community and communities nationwide. He has served as Chair of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre, Legal Counsel to the Independent Mortgage Brokers and Agents, President of the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Youth Challenge Fund, member of the Toronto Police Chief’s Advisory Board, and member of the United Way Newcomers Grant Program.

He has received both the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. Gary received the Osgoode Hall Law School “One to Watch” Gold Key Award and the South Asian Bar Association’s Young Practitioner Award.
