Opposition MPs Protest In Parliament Against Attack On HNDA Students

November 03, 2015

A tense situation erupted in Parliament when a section of the Opposition led by Mahajana Eksath Peramuna leader Dinesh Gunawardena launched a protest against the recent police attack on the HNDA students in Colombo.

Protesting MPs held placards against the attack, vehemently criticising the government.

Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella responded by saying that the government will address the issue of the student but it will not be intimidated by students who break the civil law.

Meanwhile, a heated argument developed between MP Dinesh Gunawardena and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as Gunawardena said that the Parliamentary Road has been blocked by the police and the army to stop the students from meeting the MPs.

Speaker Jayasuriya denied any involvement in calling for the police or the army and said that he will look into the matter.
