'I Wanted To Join Rajapaksa When Weerawansa Did', Amarasinghe Says

Former JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe stated that he wanted to support former President Mahinda Rajapaksa when Wimal Weerawansa broke away from the JVP and joined the Rajapaksa camp.

Speaking to BBC, Amarasinghe said that he did not make the move since he wanted to take the party with him.

However, he had to criticize the Rajapaksa government based on the party's position, Amarasinghe further maintained.

Amarasinghe pointed out that the decision to join Weerawansa for the next Local Government Elections was a part of the anti-imperialist struggle. Even President Maithripala Sirisena could join this camp one day, he said, pointing out that anyone is welcome to join them.
