DMK Chief Seeks Modi’s Intervention On Political Prisoners

November 17, 2015

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his good offices to ensure that the Sri Lankan government honoured its promise of releasing all Tamil political prisoners in the island nation.

In a letter to Modi, released to the media in Chennai, Karunanidhi said during the Presidential election campaign, Maithripala Sirisena had promised that Tamil political prisoners would be given general amnesty if he was voted to power.

The Tamil vote was the major reason for the victory of Sirisena, the DMK chief said.

In October, the Sri Lankan President reiterated his promise when the prisoners went on a protest.
