"Rajapaksa's Security Has Not Been Reduced: Former Pres. Never Had 500 Personnel In Security Detail" - Kiriella

December 07, 2015

Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella denied media reports that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's security detail had been reduced under directives of President Maithripala Sirisena.

He made this remark in Parliament this morning in response to a statement made in Parliament by UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena who  referred to a lead story of a weekend English newspaper, which said former President Rajapaksa’s security detail has been reduced.

According to the news, the government has reduced the security detail of five hundred personnel of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gunawardena said. Kiriella, responding to Gunawardena's claims, pointed out that Rajapaksa had only 80 personnel assigned for his security and therefore the story had no basis.

“He never had 500 personnel assigned for his security detail in the first place,” Kiriella said.

Kiriella responded to Gunawardena by saying that the security of the former President has not been reduced in any way - as assured in the House repeatedly over the past 10 months.

The government has clearly stated our stance on this matter, he remarked saying that the government was concerned about the security of former Presidents of the country.
