Sarath De Abrew Pleads Not Guilty For Alleged Sexual Abuse: Released On Bail

Justice Sarath de Abrew was released on bail by the Colombo High Court over the alleged sexual assault of a woman, when the case was taken up for the first time in court today.

The case was heard today before High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena. Abrew pleaded not guilty for two counts of grave sexual abuse.

He was released on a cash bail of Rs 100,000 and two sureties of Rs 200,000 each. The case was fixed for May 23.

The Supreme Court yesterday rejected a Fundamental Rights petition filed by Abrew, clearing the way for the hearing to commence today.

The Attorney General recently indicted Sarath de Abrew at the Colombo High Court on two counts on committing grave sexual abuse, under Section 365 (B) of the Penal Code.

The alleged victim, a housemaid who was employed in Abrew's house, lodged a complaint against him last year. She was admitted to Kalubowila Hospital following the alleged attack.
