No Instructions From AG To Arrest Gota Immediately: Police Confirm

Despite widespread speculations, authoritative sources from the Police Department confirmed that they had not received instructions to arrest former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. 

Many online publications last week reported that the former Defence Secretary was facing imminent arrest.  Speculation was rife when prison authorities started renovation work at the S Ward in the Welikada Prison, usually used to house VIP prisoners. 

Distinguished personalities including Wijeya Kumaratunga and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka were kept at the S Ward of the Welikada prison. There were strong speculations that the ward was being refurbished as there was a move to arrest the former Defence Secretary. Speaking to Asian Mirror, a senior official of the Ministry of Prison Reforms that the Ward S was removed as part of the normal routine and there was no special reason. 

When asked by Asian Mirror, a very senior officer from the Police Department confirmed that they had not received instructions from the Attorney General's Department to arrest Rajapaksa. 

"I don't know about other members of the former first family. But I can assure that the former Defence Secretary will not be arrested in the coming days as we haven't received any instructions," he explained. 

However, the former Defence Secretary is already facing several investigations on the anti-corruption front.
