A tense situation occurred in Aluthgama when a large number of protesters surrounded the Aluthgama Police station over an incident where a Muslim youth had allegedly assaulted a Buddhist monk.
The protesters demanded the Police to arrest those who assaulted the Buddhist monk.
Protesters also blocked the vehicle movement on the Colombo- Galle main road and as a result, a heavy traffic was reported in the area.
They also pelted stones at the vehicle of a government politician who came to negotiate with the protesters and to bring the situation under control. His vehicle, according to Police, has been damaged.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, a senior police officer said they were in talks with protesters to bring the protest to an end. Police had assured an impartial inquiry into the incident.
However, the protesters had demanded immediate arrest of the suspect.
Meanwhile, the sources close to the Muslim youth told 'Asian Mirror' that there was no assault, but an exchange of a few "unpleasant words".
"Both of them had shouted at each other on the road while traveling in two vehicles and following the incident, the monk had lodged a complaint at the police station saying he was assault,"a friend of the Muslim youth said.
