Rodrigo's New Appointment Ruffles Feathers Among Legal Fraternity

February 12, 2014

The appointment of the former Principal of Law College W.D Rodrigo as the Director General of Legal affairs at the Presidential Secretariat has created ripples within the legal and civil administrative circles, Asian Mirror learns.

Rodrigo,  was earlier sent on compulsory leave by the Council of Legal Education and thereafter asked to relinquish office following a major scandal involving " administrative and examination irregularities".

Asian Mirror learns that the Council of Legal Education chaired by Chief Justice Mohan Peiris and includes Justice Shiranee Thilakawardena, the Attorney General and a host of other personalities had commenced an inquiry into the conduct of the for Principal.

Following the inquiry it was revealed that the " integrity of the examination and administrative system" of the Law College had been "compromised" according to a highly placed source.

The literal definition of the charges translate into examination papers being leaked, marking of examination being conducted without standard, students from institutes which are not recognized being admitted into Law College, among many others.

Following the removal of Rodrigo, the Law College witnessed widespread reforms with the Chief Justice stating that " there would be no room for nepotism and the only benchmark for passing would be merit".

Questions have been raised regarding the appointment of Rodrigo to the Presidential Secretariat despite not being exonerated from the grave charges against him.
