Rajagiriya Accident: Court Orders Probe Into Phone Records Of Ranawaka, Witnesses

Colombo Additional Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya today allowed the police to obtain telephone records of two additional phone numbers of Minister Champika Ranawaka and directed them to probe the phone records of two witnesses in the case on the alleged hit-and-run accident involving Ranawaka's vehicle.

These directions were given after considering the submissions of the police and the defence lawyers.

Police told the Magistrate that the investigations on CCTV records were unsuccessful. Meanwhile they said that a seven hour statement was recorded from Ranawaka.

Attorney-at-Law Maithri Gunaratne appeared for the driver of the vehicle, who has claimed that he was driving the vehicle.

Two witnesses had earlier maintained that the Ranawaka's driver was on the driving seat at the time of the accident. This was also documented in the B report, he pointed out, saying that their statements changed after receiving a call from a certain VIP.

If Ranawaka's phone records are to probed, the phone records of the witnesses have to be recorded too, the lawyer argued. The Magistrate directed the police to do so.
